Genesis 49.2, 8-10, Psalm 72.1-5, 18-19, Matthew 1.1-17
In Genesis, Jacob blesses his sons, and in his words over Judah, we hear the first glimmer of God’s unfolding plan: from Judah will come leadership, justice, and hope. Even in a family marked by conflict and imperfection, God’s purposes move steadily toward fulfillment. The scepter shall not depart, pointing to the ultimate ruler in whom justice and mercy will meet.
Psalm 72 echoes this vision of righteous rule. God’s chosen king is a model of justice, defending the poor, rescuing the oppressed, and bringing blessing to the vulnerable. Praise rises as the earth is filled with the king’s glory, reflecting the steadfast love and faithfulness of God.
Matthew begins his Gospel with a genealogy, tracing the line from Abraham to David to Jesus. Each name carries a story of faithfulness, failure, exile, and hope. God works through ordinary people and complicated histories to bring about salvation.
As believers, we see in these readings the continuity of God’s promise and its fulfilment in Christ. God’s plan may unfold slowly, through imperfect human hands, yet it is faithful and sure. May we trust in God’s timing, live with hope, and participate in God’s kingdom through faithful living, prayer, and witness to Christ, the righteous ruler promised from Judah’s line.
