Jeremiah 23.5-8, Psalm 72.1-2, 12-13, 18-end, Matthew 1.18-24
Jeremiah speaks of a future king, a “righteous Branch” from David’s line, who will govern wisely, defend the poor, and bring salvation to God’s people. This prophecy reminds us that God’s justice is not fleeting or fragile; it will be fulfilled. Even in times of turmoil and oppression, God’s plan endures, calling the faithful to trust in the promise of restoration and peace.
Psalm 72 echoes this hope, celebrating a king whose reign brings justice and compassion. The righteous judge protects the weak, gives food to the hungry, and delivers the oppressed. Praise rises because God’s faithful love is revealed through leadership that cares for the least and the lowly. The psalm connects worship with hope for a world shaped by God’s mercy.
In Matthew, the prophecy finds fulfilment in the birth of Jesus. Mary’s child, conceived by the Holy Spirit, will save his people from their sins. Joseph’s obedience, taking Mary as his wife, models faithfulness to God’s call even when it is difficult or confusing.
As Christians, we live in the tension of promise and fulfilment. We await Christ’s kingdom while witnessing God’s mercy in the present. May we trust God’s plan, respond in faithful obedience, and share the hope of the Righteous Branch with the world around us.
