Judges 13.2-7, 24-end, Psalm 71.3-8, Luke 1.5-25
In Judges, we read of Manoah and his wife, chosen to bear Samson, a deliverer for Israel. Though they are ordinary people, God’s plan unfolds through their faithfulness. The angel’s words show that God sees beyond human limitations, calling and equipping those whom the world might overlook. Faith involves listening, trusting, and responding, even when the path is uncertain.
Psalm 71 reflects a similar reliance on God’s steadfast care. From youth to old age, the psalmist has sought refuge in God, finding strength, guidance, and hope. Life’s fragility is met with divine protection, and the faithful can trust that God will not abandon them.
In Luke, we see Zechariah and Elizabeth called to a miraculous role in God’s story: the birth of John the Baptist. Though advanced in years and initially doubtful, God’s plan prevails. John will prepare the way for the Messiah, showing that God’s purposes often come through surprising and humble beginnings.
As Christians, we are reminded that God works through ordinary lives to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Whether in times of uncertainty, age, or weakness, God calls and sustains us. May we respond with courage and trust, allowing God’s Spirit to shape us for the work he has prepared.
