Isaiah 7.10-14, Psalm 24.1-6, Luke 1.26-38
Isaiah delivers a promise that shines through the centuries: a child will be born, and his name will be Emmanuel, “God with us.” This is not simply a prophecy of birth, but a revelation of God’s presence among his people. In a world of fear, uncertainty, and threat, God comes close, bridging the gap between heaven and earth to bring hope, peace, and salvation.
Psalm 24 calls us to recognize the Lord’s kingship over all creation. “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it.” God’s glory fills the world, and those who seek purity of heart are prepared to enter God’s presence. The psalm invites us to live in integrity, humility, and reverence, reflecting God’s reign in our daily lives.
In Luke, Mary embodies faithful openness to God’s surprising work. Troubled but trusting, she receives the angel’s message, consenting to be part of God’s plan: “Let it be to me according to your word.” Her obedience demonstrates that God’s kingdom advances when ordinary people respond in faith.
As believers, we are called to welcome Emmanuel into our hearts. Through prayer, Scripture, and sacrament, we encounter God with us, who sustains, transforms, and sends us to share his light in the world. May we, like Mary, respond in trust and joy.
