Malachi 3.1-4, 4.5-end, Psalm 25.3-9, Luke 1.57-66
Malachi speaks of a coming messenger who will prepare the way, refining and purifying like fire and fuller’s soap. God’s purpose is to restore right relationship, to bring justice and mercy together, and to guide hearts toward repentance and hope. The promise of Elijah’s return reminds us that God’s work often comes through preparation, patience, and faithful attention to what seems small or hidden.
Psalm 25 calls us to trust in God’s steadfast love and guidance. “All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.” Even when life is uncertain, we are invited to seek God, rely on divine wisdom, and walk humbly, confident that God will teach us the way.
In Luke, the birth of John the Baptist fulfills these promises. His naming, as God directed, affirms divine authority and timing. The people marvel, recognizing that God is at work in ordinary human lives, shaping history through faithful obedience.
As Christians, we are called to live with alert hearts, anticipating God’s purifying and restorative work. Through prayer, Scripture, and sacrament, we participate in God’s kingdom, offering our lives in readiness and rejoicing that the Lord comes to guide, cleanse, and save.
