1 John 2.18-21, Psalm 96.1, 11-end, John 1.1-18
John writes with urgency and reassurance. He speaks of a time of testing, when truth and falsehood are hard to tell apart. Yet he reminds his readers that they are not left defenceless: they have been anointed by the Holy One, and they know the truth. Faith is not merely information learned, but a relationship received and lived. To abide in the truth is to remain rooted in Christ when voices compete for our loyalty.
Psalm 96 invites all creation to rejoice because the Lord reigns. Heaven and earth sing together as God comes to judge the world with righteousness. This judgement is not a threat but a promise: God will set things right. In worship, we align ourselves with what is real and enduring.
John’s Gospel takes us to the very beginning. The Word was with God and was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In Jesus, truth is not an idea but a person. Grace and truth are revealed not in abstraction, but in a life lived among us, full of light.
As Christians, we are called to hold fast to this truth — formed by Scripture, nourished by sacrament, and sustained in worship — trusting that the true light still shines and will not be overcome.
Prayer
Eternal God,
you have made yourself known in your Son, the living Word.
Keep us faithful amid confusion,
grounded in truth, and confident in your light.
Help us to abide in Christ,
that our lives may reflect his grace and truth,
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
