Children of God, Walking in the Light

3 January, 2026

1 John 2.29 – 3.6, Psalm 98.2-7, John 1.29-34

John reminds us that being God’s children is not a title, but a call to live in righteousness. Those born of God do what is right, following the pattern of Christ who came to take away sin. Sin does not define us; God’s love and life in Christ shape us. To abide in God is to live in light, leaving behind what obscures relationship with the Father and embracing a life marked by holiness, truth, and love.

Psalm 98 celebrates the Lord’s saving acts, calling all creation to sing and rejoice. Rivers, seas, and fields echo the triumph of God’s justice and mercy. Joy and praise are responses to God’s presence, reflecting the transformation God works in hearts and in the world.

In John, we see Jesus affirmed as the Lamb of God, the one who takes away the sin of the world. John the Baptist testifies to the Spirit resting upon him, revealing the Messiah’s authority and mission. Recognition of Christ comes through the witness of God’s Spirit, calling all to repentance and new life.

As Christians, we are invited to live as children of God, walking in the light of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, and rejoicing in God’s saving deeds.

Prayer

Merciful God,
help us to live as your children, walking in your light and truth.
Cleanse us from sin, guide us in righteousness,
and fill our hearts with joy at the work of your Son.
Strengthen us by your Spirit,
that we may witness to Christ’s love in word and deed.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
