Born of Love, Living in Hope

10 January, 2026

1 John 4.19 – 5.4, Psalm 72.1, 17-end, Luke 4.14-22

“We love because God first loved us.” John’s words take us to the source of faith itself. Christian love is not an achievement but a response. God’s love precedes us, surrounds us, and calls forth our love for God and neighbour. To believe in Jesus as the Son of God is to be born into this love, a love that reshapes our desires and reorders our lives. Such faith, John says, overcomes the world—not by domination, but by faithful obedience rooted in trust.

Psalm 72 widens our vision. God’s blessing rests on the king whose reign brings justice, peace, and flourishing for all peoples. God’s name is blessed for ever, and through this righteous rule all nations find hope. Love always bears fruit beyond itself.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus stands in the synagogue and declares that this hope is now fulfilled. The Spirit’s anointing brings good news to the poor, release to the captives, and sight to the blind. God’s love is no longer only promised; it is proclaimed and embodied in Christ.

To live as those born of God is to receive this love gratefully and to carry it outward—trusting, obeying, and bearing witness to the grace that overcomes the world.

Prayer

Loving God,
you have loved us first and given us life in your Son.
Strengthen our faith and teach us to love as you love.
Fill us with your Spirit,
that we may share good news, seek justice, and live in hope.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
