Taught by God, Set Free by Truth

13 January, 2016

Isaiah 28.23-29, Psalm 43.1, 2a, 3-end, 1 John 2.18-25, John 8.25-32

Isaiah speaks of a farmer who knows when to plough, when to sow, and how to thresh. His wisdom lies not in endless force, but in attentiveness and restraint. “This also comes from the Lord,” the prophet says. God teaches in ways suited to the moment. Divine wisdom is patient, purposeful, and shaped by love.

The psalmist longs for that guidance: “Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me.” In confusion or distress, truth is not merely information but a light that draws us back into God’s presence, where joy is restored and hope renewed.

John’s letter warns of voices that distort the truth about Christ. Faithfulness means abiding in what we have heard from the beginning. Truth is not endlessly reinvented; it is received, trusted, and lived. To remain in Christ is to remain in the truth that gives life.

Jesus declares in the Gospel that freedom flows from this same truth. To know the truth is to be liberated—from fear, deception, and bondage to sin. True freedom is not self-assertion but belonging to God.

Together, these readings call us to listen for God’s wise instruction, to cling to the truth of Christ, and to live as people set free.

Prayer

God of wisdom and truth,
teach us in your ways and lead us by your light.
Keep us rooted in Christ
and faithful to the truth we have received.
Set us free from all that binds us,
that we may live as your children,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
