Blessed and Named

1 January, 2026

Numbers 6.22-end, Psalm 8, Galatians 4.4-7, Luke 2.15-21

In Numbers, God gives Moses words to place upon the people — a blessing that is both gift and promise. The Lord’s face is turned toward us in favour; God’s name is placed upon us, marking us as his own. Blessing is not vague goodwill, but the assurance of God’s presence, protection, and peace.

Psalm 8 widens our vision. The God who sets the moon and stars in place also crowns humanity with glory and honour. We are small, yet entrusted with care of creation. Wonder and responsibility belong together in a life lived before God.

Paul, writing to the Galatians, tells us what this blessing means in Christ. God sends the Son so that we might receive adoption. We are no longer slaves, but children who can cry “Abba, Father.” The Spirit teaches us how to pray, not as strangers, but as those who belong.

In Luke’s Gospel, the child is named Jesus — “the Lord saves.” In this naming, promise and purpose meet. The shepherds return glorifying God, knowing that God has drawn near.

As Christians, we receive God’s blessing week by week, sent out marked by God’s name. May we live as children of grace, bearing Christ’s peace into the world.

Prayer

Blessing God,
turn your face towards us and give us peace.
Remind us that we are your beloved children,
called by name and held in love.
Send us out in joy and responsibility,
to reflect your glory in the world.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
